U.S. COMMERCE SECRETARY DALEY’S VISIT HONORS
THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF CHINDEX’S BEIJING UNITED FAMILY HOSPITAL

BETHESDA, MARYLAND (June 29, 1998) . . . . Chindex International, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHDX) (U.S.-China Industrial Exchange, Inc.), the leading independent American company providing Western healthcare products distribution and medical services in the People’s Republic of China, today announced the official opening of Beijing United Family Hospital (Beijing United).

A ceremony was held today to mark the official opening of Beijing United, the first and only officially licensed foreign-invested hospital venture operating in China. The Honorable William Daley, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and Mr. Zhang Wen Kang, Minister of Health of the People’s Republic of China, attended the ceremony as the guests of honor. Secretary Daley and Minister Zhang presided over the official opening ceremony for the hospital as well as the previously announced signing of a landmark $15.0 million trade deal between Chindex and the Chinese Ministry of Public Health.

Roberta Lipson, Chindex Chairperson, President and CEO, said from Beijing, "We are very excited about the official opening of Beijing United, and honored by the presence of Secretary Daley at the ceremony. We are proud to say that Beijing United is every bit the ‘center of excellence’ which we have designed it to be. Chindex has gained a unique expertise in the design, development and implementation of a private hospital program and is years ahead of any competition in this field in China."

Opened for full services since March of this year, Beijing United is an international-standard family hospital providing women’s, men’s, children’s and executive healthcare services. The initial 20 bed facility has seven birthing suites, two operating theaters, an inpatient pediatric ward, comprehensive outpatient clinic, and full-service pharmacy. Later this year the hospital will add a dental clinic and In-Vitro Fertilization clinic to its available services. Chindex plans to expand the facility to 80–100 beds in the future.

Established as a joint venture between Chindex and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences’ investment arm, Union Medical and Pharmaceutical Group, Beijing United aims to provide premium quality healthcare to Beijing’s expatriate and Chinese communities. With many types of imported medical equipment in use at Beijing United, the hospital also serves as a showcase for cutting-edge American medical technology.

Beijing United serves as the flagship of Chindex’s primary healthcare development program, the Chindex Healthcare Network, which entails plans to open five additional interconnected family-oriented primary care hospitals with a system of local area clinics affiliated with each facility. Through the Chindex Healthcare Network, Chindex plans to offer international-standard healthcare services at price levels accessible to China’s growing urban middle class families.
