CHINDEX APPOINTS NEW BOARD MEMBER

BETHESDA, MARYLAND, December 12, 2000 – Chindex International, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHDX) (U.S.-China Industrial Exchange, Inc.), the leading independent American company providing Western healthcare products distribution and medical services in the People’s Republic of China, today announced the appointment of Carol R. Kaufman to the Company’s Board of Directors.

Ms. Kaufman is currently the Vice President of Legal Affairs, Secretary and Chief Administrative Officer of The Cooper Companies, Inc. (NYSE: COO), a position that she has held since October 1995. Prior to this, she served as Vice President, Secretary, and Chief Administrative Officer of Cooper Development Company, a healthcare and consumer products company that was a former affiliate of The Cooper Companies, Inc., and held numerous financial positions with Cooper Laboratories, Inc., its parent company.

Ms. Kaufman is a member of the Executive Committee of The Olympic Club Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising and distributing funds to support athletic programs for under-privileged youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also a member of various other organizations benefiting Bay Area youth and has served as a Trustee of the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
